And If I Don't Use the Virtues?
There are two significant problems with not using the virtues:
|
Missed Opportunities in Life
These are almost everybody's goals, and the virtues put them within your reach. The virtues make these goals attainable by making use of some of the greatest gifts that God has given you---your reason, your will and chances to help others. But, hey, if you don't use the virtues, you'll miss these opportunities and you won't reach these goals. |
You miss what is important without the virtues.
|
Self-destructive Habits
We're talking about habits such as recklessness, intolerance, despair, etc. These are self-destructive because they undermine the good you are trying to accomplish in life, both personally and professionally. The virtues fight off self-destructive behavior because they are the best, highest level of behavior. If you don't use the virtues, you use behavior that is less good. Over time, those less good actions form habits---bad habits. These bad habits start to dominate your behavior and determine how you act and react. And how others see you. If you don't want to be---and be seen---as selfish, intolerant, unfair, etc., you have to use the virtues that eliminate those habits. |
