Virtues Work by Alexander Cummings
“Work doesn’t have to be troublesome or a necessary evil. It’s really an opportunity – a largely overlooked opportunity – to use the virtues and lay the foundation for a better life.”--Alexander Cummings, Virtues Work
In his book Virtues Work, Alexander Cummings explores seven virtues, and how you can use them in your life – particularly in your profession – in a way that can bring greater meaning to your work. Throughout the book are excellent examples of businesspeople who have (and some who haven’t) modelled virtues in their own companies, like Jimmy Dunne, an executive at an investment banking firm located in the World Trade Center that saw more than a third of their employees killed in 9/11. Although Dunne struggled to keep the firm open during the financial difficulties after the attack, he exemplified the virtue of compassion by deciding to continue paying the salaries of all the employees who were killed until the end of the year, and pledged to pay the cost of health insurance for all the victim’s families for years. The book includes concrete ways to incorporate each of the virtues into your daily work, including a practical program to make your resolutions stick. “When you take advantage of those opportunities [to use the virtues] at work, you’ll see your work in a new light,” says Cummings. “Work will become a place to experiment with the virtues and grow – a laboratory whose fruits are greater happiness, peace, and success.”
